GW Information Technology is the chief provider of technology services and applications at GW. The area partners with all key stakeholders across GW to equip students, faculty, and staff with the technology and tools necessary to achieve academic excellence. This position works within GW Information Technology and ensures collaboration with both University stakeholders and external vendors.
This position is responsible for all activities related to system administration for a large number of high-impact operating systems and servers, including web servers, in support of business operations, to include installing, configuring, and maintenance. This is most typically enterprise-wide and is recognized as the highest level of technical expertise in systems administration in the organization. The core responsibilities of this role are to ensure long term requirements of systems operation and administration are included in the overall enterprise planning, to provide software installations and upgrades, to regularly administer and monitor them and schedule future upgrades, and to ensure system integrity by evaluating, implementing, and managing technical solutions (both software and hardware). The position will also work to maintain a data/media recovery plan that includes regular back-ups and archiving, and develops and promotes standard operating procedures. Additional responsibilities may include directing lower level staff on complex issues, providing training and documentation to users, liaising with vendors and other information technology resource partners at GW, gathering user requirements, and troubleshooting errors/future needs.

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Working competency in designing, deploying, and maintaining enterprise system solutions using Microsoft Windows servers
Working competency in managing Microsoft System Center tools and other enterprise system configuration and monitoring platforms – e.g. SCOM, SCCM, Nagios, Puppet, etc.
Working competency in deploying and managing of various Microsoft technologies – e.g. IIS, cluster, file share, Terminal Services, RDS
Working competency in system and task automation – e.g. Powershell and Systems Center Orchestrator, general programming (python, ruby, etc.)
Working competency with deployment and management of GPOs
An understanding of and experience using Microsoft Active Directory
Demonstrable competency with TCP/IP networking (subnets, routing, and firewalls)
Working competency in designing, implementing and maintaining security best practices in accordance with industry standards – (CIS guidelines)
Knowledge of virtualization technologies with experience in managing systems in a virtualized environment – e.g. VMware
Knowledge of designing, deploying, migrating, and integrating services into the public cloud – e.g. AWS, Azure
Working competency in performance analysis and capacity planning
Experience with PKI based security solutions.
Experience in engineering fault tolerant and highly available services
Experience with using Version Control Systems – e.g. git
Experience managing database software on Microsoft Servers – e.g. MS SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle
Strong organizational skills managing multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
Strong communications and customer service skills.
Strong problem solving abilities to identify challenges, root cause analysis and offer improvement changes.
