That’s why our world-leading research group in CSIRO Agriculture and Food business unit’s Farming Systems research program are examining options to improve and provide sustainable & profitable farming systems for the agriculture sector in Australia and globally. The team is committed to working with farmers and industry to develop new tools and management practices to increase profitability and productivity, reduce resource use and maintain ecosystem health.

 

We are seeking a self-motivated Research Technician to join our Future Farm Enterprises team in Toowoomba, QLD and bring their practical knowledge & skills to assist field-based research activities. In this hands-on role, you will primarily support the operational activities related to the ongoing management and implementation of a long-term farming systems experiment, which would involve assisting with day-to-day site management, crop and soil sampling, field monitoring activities, agronomic activities (e.g. spraying, harvesting) and sample preparation. You will also collaborate with others on a range of agricultural research projects across the region, including cotton breeding and evaluation, grain and forage agronomy and soils research. You will also be required to apply your expertise and innovative thinking to take a vital role in the implementation of digital approaches to sample & field procedures within the Toowoomba team, and be a key team player in meeting experimental/project obligations.

Your duties will include:

  • Implementing complex farming systems and agronomic experimentation.
  • Assisting with agricultural management of crops (e.g., spraying, harvesting, monitoring) and experimental site management, including following protocols to collect soil & plant samples and preparing them for analysis.
  • Developing and implementing improved digital techniques in experimental approaches, including integrated sample-data systems, new tools and technologies, sensor networks and other environmental monitoring systems.
  • Undertaking tasks often with competing time-frames, working with discretion to decide on the timing of operations within the team’s plan, and planning ahead to meet experiment and/or project demands.

 

Location: Toowoomba, QLD

Salary: AU$68K – AU$86K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Relevant trade certificate/diploma/bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in agricultural science or similar field.
  • Experience with implementation of experimental procedures including accurately recording and managing various types of data.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous activities.
  • Experience with agronomy and management of various crops (particularly those grown in subtropical farming systems); implementing agricultural experiments including soil and plant sampling procedures; and application of information & new technologies in agriculture (e.g., sensors, computer applications, drones) would be highly regarded.
