Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

Generally, Jewhan Lee is a visiting scholar from Korea Atomic Energy Agency. He will be here for about a year to perform various research work scope that will culminate in a number of seminars that are provided and delivered to the Nuclear Science and Engineering Division. In addition, he will be talking with a various principle investigators about their research and development activities and identifying areas where Argonne and Kaeri can collaborate.

Position Requirements

Sodium Experiment related Area

  • STELLA Program

KAERI has finished the construction of large-scale sodium test facility (STELLA-2) and it is being operated. Some issues and challenges that KAERI confronted while making it work needs to be solved through sharing the experience and know-how between ANL and KAERI. The examples of such issues are inaccuracy of EMF(electro-magnetic flowmeter), PID control of EMP(electro-magnetic pump), frequent malfunctioning of the discrete level sensor, handling and treatment of sodium during maintenance and repair, and etc.

  • Preparation for Benchmark Calculation

The result of STELLA-2 is ideal for the system code V&V (Verification and Validation). Preparation for such benchmark calculations needs to be preceded and it requires the detailed information of test facility with test conditions. The data will be addressed, clarified, and organized to be eligible for the code user based on the user’s requirements.

Advanced I&C Systems

  • OFS (Optical Fiber Sensor)

Implementation of OFS to the large-scale facility is a bridge between the sensor and the data user. The basic information of KAERI’s recent research activity regarding the OFS installation on new facility will be shared in search for collaborative R&D item.

  • Ultrasonic Waveguide Sensor

As one of the approaches to advance the instrumentation in SFR, the ultrasonic waveguide technique is applied to not only the ISI (In-Service Inspection) but also flowmeter for large piping replacing the EMF with enormous magnet. KAERI’s technology based on EMAT (electro magnetic acoustic transducer) sensor using leak Lamb wave will be introduced to share the experience on related R&D area.

  • Miscellaneous Instrumentation and Component

The development status of advanced pressure transmitter for high temperature, the inductive current-type level-meter, the prognostic/diagnostic all-in-one valve, and etc will be shared to find collaborative R&D items.

Sodium-based TES (Thermal Energy Storage)

  • TES and PCS (Power Conversion System) options

The working fluid for commercial TES is molten salts, but the market seeks for alternatives due to its critical issues. KAERI’s recent activities on sodium-based TES development coupled with high efficiency PCS will be introduced and try to convince the needs of such system. The new idea and/or suggestions from ANL will be addressed and implemented to the KAERI’s activity.

  • TES with NPP in the Grid

The pros and cons of coupling TES with SFR (or any type of SMRs) will be considered and its role in the grid with renewable energy sources will be discussed to evaluate its potential

Seminar Plan

“Introduction to STELLA Program”, in September “Application of Optical Fiber Sensor (OFS) for High Temperature Sodium System”, in November “Sodium-based Thermal Energy Storage System Development”, in February “Detailed Discussion on benchmark calculation using STELLA data”, in April “Novel R&D Items and Collaborative Work Suggestions”, in June
