Job Description

The successful candidate will perform research tasks within the transportation/power multi-physics computational team and in collaboration with other computational, chemical, and material scientists at the Laboratory towards developing carbon capture and related decarbonization heavy technologies (like electrification, waste heat recovery, alternate fuel combustion, etc.).

Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of heat and mass transfer across contactors of various types (solid sorbent, liquid solvent, membranes) leveraging High Performance Computing resources. Develop reduced order models for application in process simulations of linked unit operations. Write scientific proposals, white papers, papers, and reports. Use machine learning methods to co-optimize contactor geometries and understand the sensitivities of the desired outputs to various input parameters.

Position Requirements

  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. in mechanical/aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, chemical engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Knowledge of hydrogen production pathways and CO2 capture (point-source and DAC) technologies.

  • Knowledge of code development (in C++/C/Fortran/julia) for the solution of non-linear partial differential equations. Version maintenance via git.

  • Knowledge of chemical thermodynamics is vital, especially use of thermodynamic databases via Cantera/Coolprop/Refprop/Chemkin/Aspen etc.

  • Working knowledge of OpenFOAM/basilisk/PeleLM/Nek5000/deal ii, or any other open-source CFD framework. A working knowledge of proprietary software like CONVERGE/FLUENT/STAR-CCM/Comsol.

  • Collaborative skills, including the ability to work well with other divisions, laboratories, and universities.

  • Skilled in oral and written communications at all levels of the organization.
