Job Description

Summary

The Eye Bank Technician III is an integral position to the Lions Eye Bank.  The position works to procure tissue from the local hospitals, morgues and funeral homes.  The tissue is used in transplant surgery and/or research.  The position evaluates corneal tissues and donor information to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.

Job Duties

  • Recovers eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant or research purposes.
  • Performs and documents donor physical and ocular assessment.
  • Obtains blood specimens for serologic testing.
  • Performs internal processing of tissue on an as needed bases.
  • Requests and obtains medical records of donors.
  • Reviews potential donor medical and social history to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
  • Delivers eye tissue to surgeons for transplant or research.
  • Answers and screens referral calls for eye donors.
  • May contact families of qualified potential donors and obtains consent to donate eye tissue.
  • Enters referral data into database.
  • Maintains clean and safe laboratory environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a tissue banking, funeral homes or working with next of kin.
  • College degree either AA, BS or BA.
  • Certifications COA, COT or COMT through JCAHPO
  • Three years working as an ophthalmic assistant or ophthalmic technician within an ophthalmology practice.
