This role is part of a national team working closely with the other team members across the CSIRO Education and Outreach business unit to generate, source, and share evidence for what works in STEM education.
As a Principal Advisor, Impact & Evaluation, you’ll have the opportunity to plan and undertake monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) activities for several programs and build the evaluation capacity of CSIRO’s Education & Outreach overall. You’ll be a part of the national team working very closely with both internal and external stakeholders to generate evidence for what works in STEM education, and understand the impact and improve our STEM programs. If you enjoy working independently within your own function and enjoy resolving complex problems, requiring a high degree of skill and knowledge in evaluation, and consolidating qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis into high-quality and useable materials, then do not hesitate to apply!
Your duties will include:
- Coordinate the delivery of monitoring, evaluation and learning activities across Education & Outreach using a range of methodologies and managing ethics and jurisdictional approvals.
- Working with the team leads of relevant programs to facilitate a continuous improvement practice and enhanced delivery of project outcomes.
- Conduct complex qualitative and quantitative data collection, storage, and analysis processes in compliance with organisational, ethics, and jurisdictional policies and permissions.
- Writing reports, case studies, and presentations for internal and external audiences within agreed timeframes and using innovative techniques to increase the utilisation of evaluation evidence.
- Influencing the decisions of the Business Unit’s managers by recognising the need for change and initiating and implementing effective and sometimes innovative solutions where relevant.
- Shared responsibility for the outcomes of a team, allocation of resources and for performance management and career development of the team and managing specialist external providers, such as evaluation subcontractors, as required.
- Developing effective stakeholder engagement strategies and liaising with stakeholders to determine their needs and tailoring solutions to meet their needs.
- Representing the Business Unit at external and internal forums as required.
Location: Any CSIRO location across Australia
Salary: AU$105k – AU$114k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: There are two full-time opportunities; one is an indefinite position, and the other is up to a 4-year specified term position

To be considered you will need:
- Relevant diploma/bachelor’s or advanced degree or equivalent relevant work experience in social science, education research, or program evaluation.
- Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality written materials in a timely manner as well as strong presentation and facilitation skills. Examples of written reports will need to be provided.
- Demonstrated experience liaising with a diverse range of stakeholders to achieve objectives on time and within budget.
- Proven involvement in qualitative and quantitative data collection, storage, and qualitative and quantitative analysis processes in compliance with ethics and jurisdictional permissions.
- Prior experience in working with or within a science and research organisation or having knowledge and experience in STEM education data or research or evaluation projects will be highly regarded however not mandatory.
