Position Description
The Research Assistant will support Dr. Laura Hatfield, a biostatistician in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School, on research in data quality and causal inference. The RA's primary responsibilities are 1) data management and analysis and 2) project management.

Data management and analysis tasks include:
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for large federal datasets.
  • Maintain code and data documentation.
  • Create analytical datasets for analysis by other members of the research team.
  • Develop matching algorithms to merge across multiple datasets.
  • Summarize and display data in reports that contain both statistics and data visualizations.
  • Devise creative explorations of missing data and out-of-range values.

Project management tasks include:
  • Manage logistics of study team meetings.
  • Maintain shared resources such as reference databases.
  • Organize research tasks in Trello.
  • Assist with the preparation of required reports for the sponsors, IRB, and data owners.
  • Participate in preparing manuscripts and presentations.

This is a one-year grant-funded position, with the possibility of renewal. The position is supported by two large federal grants. The first is the Data and Methods core of a program project grant funded by NIA called "Improving Medicare In an Era of Change". A key aim of the grant is to understand the quality of the new Medicare Advantage encounter data. The second is an RO1 funded by the AHRQQ called "Examining payment and delivery model impacts on health equity using novel quasi-experimental causal inference methods."
 
Basic Qualifications
  • Two or more years of related research experience. Higher education may count towards experience.
  • Applicant should have proficiency in using statistical software packages such as STATA.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • BA or BS in (bio)statistics, economics, health policy, or related quantitative field preferred.
  • Strong programming skills in R, STATA, or SAS; excellent organization and writing skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Basic understanding of the Medicare program; experience with Trello and Zotero.
  • The ideal candidate will exhibit wise judgment, patience, flexibility, a spirit of curiosity and teamwork, time management, and attention to detail.
  • This position is ideal for someone who wants to pursue doctoral studies in (bio)statistics, health economics, or health policy.
Additional Information
This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position. 

This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
