Job Description

The Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking to hire a technician within the Low Energy Technical Support group. Together with scientists in the Low Energy Research group and an international user base, the Technical Support group is responsible for supporting the successful execution of experiments at the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS), which serves as a national user facility for atomic and nuclear physics research. This individual will work on experimental equipment maintenance and servicing and technical support for the regular operation of experimental systems within the ATLAS facility. The role involves supporting a broad range of activities that will involve, in some capacity, working with mechanical systems and structures, electrical systems, cryogenics systems, vacuum pumps and vacuum systems, lifting and rigging, handling of pressurized gases, working in radiologically controlled environments, and so on.

Key responsibilities are:

  • The routine maintenance of experimental equipment, including servicing, storage, movement of equipment around the facility and laboratory, and installation/takedown.

  • Procurement of parts and materials for supporting the equipment maintenance, including shipping, and receiving of equipment to vendors and other facilities.

  • Troubleshoot and fix basic faults in equipment.

  • Work with a diverse team of physicists, technical support personnel, and the ATLAS operations personnel, in modifying existing equipment and experimental areas, or implementing new ones.

  • Routine housekeeping tasks and organization of materials and equipment.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Good technical knowledge of engineering, physics, or related fields.

  • Comprehensive skills with basic laboratory equipment.

  • Excellent communication skills to work within a diverse and complex science research environment.

  • Basic computational skills sufficient to use the organization's suite of web-based software tools for procurement, training, retrieving safety documentation, and basic organization and communication (Microsoft Office software).

  • Outstanding commitment to safety.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • At PT1 (Professional Technical Careers – Level 1) level, candidates should have either an Associate degree, Diploma or Trade Certificate from a trade school, Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent and 0 years of experience.

  • At the PT2 (Professional Technical Careers – Level 2) level, candidates should have either an Associate degree, Diploma or Trade Certificate from a trade school, Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent and 2+ years of experience.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Good working knowledge of some or all of the following: vacuum systems, cryogenics (use of liquid nitrogen, helium), crane use and rigging, use of pressurized gas cylinders, use of power tools, and standard machine shop tools.
