CSIRO Fire Testing services combines expertise and full-scale fire test capabilities to simulate a wide range of fire scenarios, providing a unique fire research, consulting and testing facility to industry. Registered by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA), our testing facilities are designed and equipped to conduct a wide range of fire tests based on Australian, international and other standards. The group also provides services in interpretation of results, assessing conformity with specification and standards, research & development, and construction in bushfire-prone areas.

 

As a Senior Consultant, you will have a key customer-focussed role in providing technical consulting services, related to fire-resistance of building systems, to our commercial clients in the building and infrastructure sector. You will be required to draw on your well-developed domain knowledge and stakeholder management skills to liaise with fire testing staff and industry partners, efficiently perform desktop analysis of the fire testing performance results of various tested building systems and prototypes, and deliver comprehensive fire assessment technical reports and consulting services. You may also be required to assist the team with your expert fire-resistance testing skills and project management capabilities.

Your duties will include:

  • Operating independently and using engineering judgement when providing consulting services pertaining to the technical assessment of building systems under fire conditions.
  • Providing consulting services delivered through written technical assessments and performance-based assessments on the likely performance of fire protection systems to comply with:
    • the ‘Deemed to Satisfy’ provisions of the BCA as well as International codes.
    • the performance requirements of the BCA (NCC), based on referenced test standards, test data, engineering judgement and calculations.
  • Assisting the Team Leader with project delivery outcomes and timeframes within budget expectations, as well as using engineering judgement, expertise and specialist skills to assist in designing performance-based research and test procedures on an ad-hoc basis to fulfil commercial client expectations.
  • Liaising with the fire testing team to assist in the determination of client requirements, data analysis and technical reporting in accordance with Australian and International fire test standards.
  • Assisting with fire-resistance testing when required.
  • Participating in planning projects and taking responsibility for the scheduling and completion of significant parts of projects, including allocating and directing tasks where appropriate.

 

Location: Sydney (North Ryde), NSW

Salary: AU$105K – AU$114K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A bachelor degree qualification in Engineering fields such as Structural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. 
  • Strong communication skills and writing of detailed technical reports and assessments for commercial clients.
  • Track record creating and fostering cooperation within a team environment and between teams.
  • Relevant knowledge of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) Deemed to Satisfy provisions relating to the fire resistance of building elements and systems.
  • Relevant knowledge of Australian and International fire testing standards, assessment guidelines and related fire design standards.
  • Project management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in commercial environments subjected to change and external constraints.
