Summary

The Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) is seeking a Manager, Research Operations to assist in the management and implementation of the Baylor Genomic Medicine Initiative.  This role will serve as the operational Program Manager for the Baylor Genomic Medicine Program and will interface between the HGSC, Baylor Clinical Operations, and the Office of Research to support this multi-department effort. 

 

The translation of developments in genomics and genetics into routine clinical practice is the key driver for the advancement of precision medicine. Technical developments in genomics and data management have enabled some of the components required to enable this translation, however effective broad-scale transformation of current adult medical practice remains a challenge. To address these challenges, Baylor College of Medicine is launching the Genomic Medicine Initiative which will provide the infrastructure to enable precision medicine and clinical translation studies. This initiative will leverage a partnership between the Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) and the Baylor Department of Medicine. 

 

The Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) was founded in 1996 during the Human Genome Project and continues to be a world leader in genomics. The fundamental interests of the HGSC are in advancing biology and genetics by improved genome technologies. As a large-scale sequencing center funded by the National Institutes of Health, the HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work on the cutting-edge of genomic science in a state-of-the-art institution. Today, the HGSC employs ~ 150 staff, and it occupies more than 36,000 square feet on the 14th, 15th, and 16th floors of the Margaret M. and Albert B. Alkek Building. The HGSC is located on the southwest edge of downtown Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S., in the Texas Medical Center, the world's largest medical complex.

Job Duties

  • Tracks program milestones, which include stakeholders across multiple departments across Baylor.
  • Prepares operational workplans related to the launch of the Genomic Medicine Initiative. These plans will involve aspects related to sample collection logistics, data management, IRB compliance, clinical sequencing and associated downstream management.  
  • Leads/supervises the work of Genomic Medicine project staff including project coordinators, QA analysts and will directly manage one or more professional level employees.
  • Prepares utilization reports and plan for required resources across functional areas based on scope and schedule. 
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement to execution of processes and tools.
  • Creates project schedules, and maintains them through the project lifecycle.
  • Discusses all project requirements with collaborators prior to initiation to ensure success.
  • Communicates and documents project status to funding agencies and project stakeholders on a regular basis.
  • Facilitates communication with collaborators and maintain relationships in a proactive fashion.
  • Coordinates logistics and contributes to contract execution with relevant partners.
  • Assists in efforts related to research compliance.
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Four years of relevant experience. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Regulatory compliance and experience in IRB oversight
  • Prior experience with project management in a research or healthcare setting
  • Experience with Epic

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Tact and diplomacy in dealing with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Must be proficient in the use of a personal computer and Microsoft software programs including word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics.
