Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine; strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.



Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a modified-hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 1-2 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.



The primary responsibility of the Data Engineer is data standards and procedures, warehousing, design and development of logical and physical data models and databases, distributed data management, and information management functions. As Data Architect, you will be responsible for:

Strategically designing, developing, and implementing data models for an enterprise data warehouse.
Act as a primary advocate of data modeling methodologies and data processing best practices.


Specific duties and responsibilities:

Create and maintain documentation and define best practices in support of proper change management, security and operational requirements
Create the design of physical and logical data warehouse models identifying data sources, data movement, interfaces, and analytics, with the goal of ensuring data quality.
Investigate and understand new technologies and additional capabilities of current platforms that support vision of Big Data, leading to their adoption when appropriate.
Educate peers and cross-train teammates with Big Data concepts and application of technology to serve DAR needs
Create and maintain a current and accurate view of the “bigger data picture” by documenting the data architecture and environment
Creatively develop opportunities for data reuse, migration, or retirement
Create ETL specification documents
Develop testing analysis. Lead functional testing, quality assurance testing and end-user validation.
Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve problems in the data and reporting environment
Utilize APIs provided by 3rd party hosted solutions for data collection and interface to data warehouse
Be on call for data problems that require immediate resolution
Responsible for developing and maintaining robust, scalable data pipelines capable of ingesting and processing large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
Oversight of specific projects like implementing a new data warehouse, migrating data to cloud-based storage solutions, or integrating new data sources into existing pipelines.
Ensuring the integrity and security of data systems in compliance with company policies and regulatory standards.


This is a term-limited position with a length of up to 24 months.



Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required.
Five years of related work experience focused within database management and design and business requirement gathering.
Additional experience may be substituted for education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree preferred.
Strong and demonstrated experience with data management, high availability, disaster recover, data replication, performance tuning and application integration in data platforms
Experience in Data Modeling and Data Warehousing
Knowledge of dimensional modeling and other data warehouse design techniques
Strong conceptual, problem solving, and analytical skills.
Strong knowledge of RDBMS (DB2, Oracle, SQL Server) including SQL
Hands on knowledge of technologies/solutions adopted by DAR including but not limited to:
Microsoft Power BI
Salesforce
Tableau
MS SharePoint/Teams
Talend
