College/Department Information

The Medical College of Georgia is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 260 students per class. The educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provides about 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to more than 500 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.

Job Summary

A Standardized Patient (SP) is an individual trained to portray a patient, family member, health care team member etc. He/she will be employed for purposes of training and/or assessing health care professionals (e.g., medical students, residents and nurse).

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Portrayal of given role

Must be able to portray a person other than himself or herself effectively and consistently in a standardized way. Recall actions and dialogue that may have occurred during interaction with the trainee.

Wearing of hospital gown

Must be willing to wear a hospital gown with only undergarments underneath, while on camera and/or observed live through an observation window or video monitor.

Physical Examination

Must be comfortable having repeated physical examination maneuvers performed on self.

Communication and Feedback

Accurately and consistently completes Communication Skills and History & Physical checklist indicating areas addressed or not by the learner during scenario assessment. Provides feedback to learners in a constructive manner as coached.

Other duties as assigned

Performs other job related duties and/or activities as needed and/or directed to support the department.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

High School diploma, GED or equivalent from a recognized state or federal accredited organization required.

Required Experience

Experience as a standardized patient, a health professional, an instructor, or an actor preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability to follow directions in achieving the portrayal of a given role.

Simulate all aspects of each clinical scenario including a patient's appearance, demeanor and affect, communication style, chief complaint, past medical history and physical findings.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days/M-F (.49 FTE, Part-Time)

Pay Grade: 15

Salary: Minimum $20.00/hour

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
