The role of Research Projects staff in CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific and technological activities with other research staff usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or assisting with experimental, observational or technology development work, and in carrying out the more practical aspects of the work.

The CSIRO BioFoundry in partnership with the Advanced Engineering Biology Future Science Platform delivers high-throughput synthetic biology capability to projects.
The BioFoundry combines laboratory automation and high-throughput equipment and software to design and assemble DNA parts in novel ways, and to engineer and test proteins and microorganisms.

The Research Technician – Synthetic Biology will carry out high throughput molecular biology work and assay development.
We are looking for a team member who is thoughtful, meticulous, well-organised, energetic, collaborative, and fully engaged in the execution of duties.

Your duties will include:

  • Use advanced molecular biology techniques and high-throughput processes to build DNA assemblies and to engineer and test microbial strains to meet timelines and project deliverables.
  • Use software tools for DNA and organism design, build, test, analysis, and large dataset management.
  • Adapt, develop, and optimise high-throughput protocols for strain engineering and testing including PCR, transformation, DNA sequencing, plate-based protein and enzyme assays, flow cytometry, and quality control processes.
  • Contribute to SOP development, track data following good practices, communicate results, progress any adverse outcomes to the project team.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives.

Location: Dutton Park, Brisbane

Salary:AU$70K to AU$90K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Essential

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Synthetic Biology, or a related field
  • Experience in microbiology, molecular or synthetic biology techniques such as microbial culture, PCR, DNA manipulation, transformation, biochemical assays, and sequencing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage with attention to detail, multiple ongoing multi-day workflows, including preparing reagents and materials, managing implementation, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to rapidly learn new skills and use modern technologies such as instrument software, and data management and analysis tools.
  • A commitment to fostering an effective team environment, communicating, and working with others across teams and disciplines.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in laboratory automation, including liquid handlers and analytical equipment or familiarity with common programming languages such as Python.
