What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an experienced Quality Engineer for Sandia’s Weapon Modernization Hardware and Assembly Lab Operations (WMHALO). The WMHALO executes a wide variety of complex and hazardous activity level work in support of SNL diverse weapon modernization portfolio. The successful candidate will support the Quality Program Lead in the planning, scheduling, and execution of activity level work for a large and diverse team of technologist, engineers, and support personnel. The Quality Engineer will address issues related to hardware non-conformances related to form, fit, or function, procedure deviations, safety and quality issues. The Quality Engineer will also assist with work planning, safe-by-design operations, qualification training, and the implementation of IT solutions for reporting and record keeping with the objective of fostering and maintaining a strong safety culture. The candidate must have a passion for Quality, project management, work planning & control, and strong knowledge of lab and test operations. The work is challenging, dynamic and it will require attention to detail. Strong communication (written and verbal), relationship building skills, and teaming skills are critical for success.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Serve as the quality engineer on a complex assembly or disassembly operation.
  • Employ analytical thinking to work through ambiguous problems with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Leverage mechanical, process, test, and manufacturing engineering skills to identify practical solutions to difficult hardware and assembly/disassembly challenges.
  • Collaborate with component, system design, qualification, and test engineers to ensure weapon systems under test meet required product definition parameters for test activities.
  • Collaborate closely with the hardware and assembly teams to ensure readiness and quality of all lab operations.
  • Develop and up-channel nonconformance/problem reports to inform critical design decisions and component maturation.
  • Plan and coordinate the safety and work planning activities for the team tasked with performing a wide variety of weapon modernization hardware, assembly, and field support activities.
  • Ensure program policies, procedures and processes incorporate configuration management, risk management, safety, health, and quality standards as applicable.
  • Provide authoritative consultation and advice to projects based on experience and technical knowledge.
  • Employ tools and applications to manage various workflow, ensure adequate training and readiness, documentation, and reporting.
  • Participate in accident and event investigations involving injuries and damage to NW hardware or related facilities and assists in identification of causes and corrective actions.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel may be required for this position.

Salary Range:

$95,400 - $185,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate\'s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in a related STEM field, plus one (1) year of experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in stated field, plus five (5) years of relevant experience; OR equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Active DOE Q clearance or DoD Top Secret clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in above-stated field.
  • Experience in a nuclear weapons (systems or component) .
  • Experience with Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Ability to make decisions requiring scientific, engineering, and programmatic judgment.
  • Experience defining, improving, & controlling processes.
  • Continuously improving and utilizing lesson learned.
  • Knowledge of quality principles including project and configuration management processes and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of safety and health regulations and policies (OSHA, DOE, and Sandia) related to the lab and test operations (includes explosive, electrical, chemical, radiological, and mechanical hazards).
  • Strong IT skills to manage various workflow, data management, and reporting IT applications.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.

About Our Team:

Department 2331 is a dynamic team which directly supports and executes lab operations for the B61-12/13, W80-4, W87-1 Life Extension Programs (LEP), W88 ALT370 & ALT940, and W93 programs. The mission includes Hardware Management (production planning & hardware operations), assembly/disassembly operations, component fabrication and PRT support, Quality Assurance, and IT/Cyber support activities. We directly support and contribute to the research & development, design & engineering, experiments and qualification testing, design maturation, and production of these weapon systems. Our team coordinates internally and externally to ensure that parts and components are developed and acquired in a timely fashion to ensure test assemblies and full test units are available to support development and qualifications tests and other experiments. Within the assembly team (2331-1), we assemble, disassemble, test, and maintain test units during environmental, electrical, thermal, and flight qualification tests and other experiments. Across the organization we also plan a variety of work activities, develop and assist design, qualification, & test engineers with assembly/disassembly procedures, and perform the actual hands-on work with hardware at the component and system level. Most of the work performed within 2331 is activity level work and requires keen attention to detail, high standards of quality, and strict adherence to security & safety requirements.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
