What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Intern Year Round - R&D Undergrad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Organize a wide variety of materials based on their different chemical/physical characteristics
  • Perform lab cleanup and organization
  • Collect sample images using optical microscopes
  • Handle and mix chemicals
  • Aid in design of test fixtures, layouts, assemblies, and procedures
  • Aid in experimental assembly and disassembly
  • Utilize lab instruments including but not limited to load-frames, thermal chambers, microscopes, and electrical contact resistance
  • Use your creativity to improve testing methodologies

Salary Range:

Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Strong organizational skills/abilities
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related subjects
  • Basic understanding and hands on experience with chemical laboratory etiquette and safe lab practices
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Team oriented personality

About Our Team:

The Materials A&L, ARM and Data Engineering Department provides the expertise, knowledge and capabilities to anticipate, detect, assess, and predict materials concerns that affect nuclear weapon product lifecycle management. We integrate multidisciplinary materials science expertise and data science in support of all phases of product life. Our team provides a critical interface with the NNSA through its leadership of the Aging & Lifetimes and At-Risk Materials programs. We are also responsible for stewarding key partnerships with the weapon modernization programs. The department coordinates a team of experts who serve as liaisons between the SNLNM/CA materials community and the Product Realization Teams to ensure robust decision-making for materials usage throughout the product realization process. Our materials compatibility evaluation team partners with the liaisons to improve confidence in materials selection. This broad suite of mission activities generates a large and diverse body of data. The department's data engineering team develops and implements a modern data and information management framework to ensure that the data are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable by the materials community.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
