What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Engineering Program/Project Lead to run the Enterprise Datacenter Infrastructure at Sandia National Labs.

  • Data Center Infrastructure Team Leadership
  • Prioritize tasks and projects to ensure team member efforts are properly directed
  • Direct team members to ensure timely completion of tickets, projects, and designs to meet customer SLA’s
  • Analyze data center best practices and future technologies to create strategic plans which will prepare the data center for future hardware power and cooling requirements
  • Communicate with customers to provide ticket and project updates
  • Coordinate with vendors to create Contract Specific Safety Plans (CSSPs) and Statements of Work (SOWs)
  • Interface with Sandia facilities and ES&H to ensure all safety and code requirements are met
  • Data Center Architecture and Design
  • Coordinate with other teams currently or planning to house equipment in the data center to determine current and future requirements
  • Submit tickets to Sandia facilities for projects, walk down projects with facilities to create a scope of work.
  • Collaborate with design teams until a finalized design is reached with meets customer requirements
  • Collaborate with contractors, project managers, and construction managers during project construction to minimize impacts to customers, respond to design discrepancies, and provide support as needed
  • Data Center Outage Coordination
  • Coordinate outages and impacts with facilities and affected customers within the data center
  • Analyze outage options to determine the best path forward with minimal impacts
  • Refeed power and provide temporary cooling where necessary to prevent unnecessary downtime
  • Data Center Tours
  • Coordinate with requestors and other team members to set up dates and provide tours of data centers
  • Data Center Consolidation and Consultation
  • Review hardware purchase requests and approve or reject. Ensure adequate cooling, power, and floor space is available within the data center the deploy this equipment
  • Data Center Cooling
  • Install water piping, temperature gauges, pressure gauges, circuit setters, and hoses for liquid cooled HPC machines
  • Install CDU’s, cooling manifolds, and cooling doors to support current and future systems
  • Data Center Power
  • Calculate current loads on PDU’s panels, switchboards, transformers, and substations to determine current and future capacity.
  • Build power whips, install breakers in floor PDU’s, tie power whips into floor PDU’s, run whips under floor, and tie into rack PDU’s
  • Test and install bus taps and connect to racks
  • Update panel schedules
  • Data Center Miscellaneous Infrastructure
  • Install overhead and underfloor cable tray
  • Install/remove various floor tiles as needed for power/cooling
  • Install/remove solid and perforated ceiling tiles as needed
  • Install safety measures for ES&H compliance and personnel safety
  • Data Center Maintenance
  • Respond to alarms from HPC, Nlyte, and the SOC related to data center cooling and power
  • Coordinate with Sandia facilities for preventive maintenance on CRAC units, air handlers, pumps, chillers, heat exchangers, switchboards, panels, and PDU’s
  • Coordinate with vendors to bring contractors on site to perform preventive maintenance on CDU’s and cooling doors
  • Repair data center infrastructure when critical failures occur and need a timely resolution
  • Data Center Receiving, Staging, and Shipping (Buildings 725W and 725E)
  • Receive and stage deliveries
  • Submit MoveIt tickets or Webshippers and prepare shipments for leaving the data center
  • Coordinate with other teams, Millwrights, and Sandia facilities for large system deliveries or moves
  • Data Center Reapplication
  • Remove power and cooling connections from decommissioned HPC systems
  • Remove nodes/servers from decommissioned HPC systems and coordinate with reapplication team for pickup of pallets and racks
  • Data Center DCIM
  • Update Nlyte when power is installed, moved, or removed. This includes switchboards, panels, busways, PDU’s, and power whips.
  • Update Nlyte when cooling is installed, moved, or removed. This includes, air handlers, CRAC units, CDU’s, pumps, heat exchangers, cooling doors, and chiller plant changes.
  • Update floor plan for HPC systems
  • Partner with other laboratories to push forward AI research.
  • Develop and present conceptual designs for engineered systems that meet defined requirements, while identifying necessary subsystems, components, and interfaces
  • Plan and oversee project execution for the datacenter infrastructure team, coordinating with internal and external teams to ensure alignment and adherence to project timelines and objectives

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Engineering or other relevant field plus 5 years of relevant experience, or Master's degree in Information Technology, Engineering, or other relevant field plus 1 year of relevant experience
  • Experience leading or managing programs, projects, services, and/or teams
  • Experience leading teams in data center operations (DCO) with a focus on infrastructure
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent is required to start

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Knowledge and background in one or more scientific or engineering disciplines, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, systems engineering, physical security engineering, or chemical engineering
  • Knowledge of datacenter infrastructure best practices that deal with cooling, power, space management, and design
  • Knowledge of project management practices for technical work, including developing project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages; managing to scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines; and documenting baseline reports and change control actions
  • Ability to make decisions requiring scientific, engineering, and programmatic judgment
  • Knowledge of the technical or operational discipline of the assigned project
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines
  • Ability to model behaviors that reflect Sandia's core values

About Our Team:

Department 9774 is responsible for managing the daily activities of critical IT services. This includes working in collaboration with the SNL Facilities team in several 24×7 data center environments to ensure all critical systems are operational supporting the mission of the IT infrastructure for Sandia National Laboratories on both the unclassified and classified levels.
