What Your Job Will Be Like:

If so, the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Radiation Protection (RP) Organization is seeking an Engineering Program & Project Lead (EPPL) EPPLfor the RP Quality and Compliance (RPQC) Program within Department 4612, RP Policy & Administration within the SNL corporate Radiation Protection Organization (4610). The Radiation Protection Quality & Compliance (RPQC) EPPLEPPL leads a team of Health Physicists, Radiological Control Technologists (RCTs), Quality personnel, and ES&H professionals in the development and implementation of the SNL corporate occupational Radiation Protection Program in accordance with DOE 10 CFR 835, 10 CFR 830, and associated DOE Orders and directives. The RPQC EPPL oversees and guides the activities of the RPQC Program comprised of several core functional Project spaces including RP Emergency Response, Environmental Health Physics, RP Assessments, and ALARA Coordination, as well as the Device & Source (D&S) Program, and all other key elements of the corporate occupational Radiation Protection Program.

Working with RP Training, Dosimetry, Instrumentation, counting laboratory, Radiological Operations Programs, and SNL R&D and S&E partners, the RPQC EPPL defines and implements10 CFR 835 and other DOE regulatory drivers using engineering and technical expertise. This role ensures safe mission function and performance by developing projects and systems to meet requirements and identifying the necessary work products. The RPQC EPPL defines project initiatives, objectives, deliverables, budgets, and schedules; acquires and manages resources for planning, tracking, and executing projects from initiation to closeout; monitor cost, schedule, and performance; and incorporate systems engineering, configuration management, risk management, and quality standards into all projects.

On any given day, the RPQC EPPL will:

  • Lead, supervise, and monitor the activities of RPQC personnel to ensure the proper implementation and application of RP requirements and systems.
  • Plan and lead engineering and technical projects and programmatic working groups, coordinating as required with work performed in other internal and external programs, departments, and organizations.
  • Define RPQC Project/system and subsystem requirements, project scopes, schedules, cost estimates, and deliverables that support RP, ES&H, division, and mission objectives.
  • Develop project plans and work breakdown structures using standard principles and advanced project management techniques and tools to plan and negotiate scope and deliverables, identify resource-loaded schedules, and assign various tasks to complete project deliverables.
  • Provide expert-level advisement to internal and external customers in the appropriate application of specialized radiological engineering, health physics, nuclear engineering, and all applicable RP-related DOE regulations and orders and SNL policy.
  • Provide consultation on RP requirements and limitations within the allowability of DOE radiation protection regulations, orders, and directives.
  • Advise RP management on resource allocations for RPQC projects and report the status of cost, schedule, and performance to management.

Work is fast-paced, and assignments may change frequently in response to customer and RP organization needs. Some travel may be required. Activities may include working with or in the presence of hazardous materials. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite at SNL in Albuquerque, NM.

Salary Range:

$114,000 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or closely related appropriate physical science, plus (5) years of directly related experience.
  • Working knowledge of 10 CFR 835 and/or 10 CFR 20, and 10 CFR 830 .
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and maintaining a DOE or NRC occupational radiation protection program.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master's degree in Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or closely related appropriate physical science and extensive operational health physics work experience.
  • Experience working in a regulated (i.e., DOE, NRC) operational health physics environment.
  • Proven track record of excellent organizational and individual leadership skills with the ability to work collaboratively across various roles and disciplines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, interpersonal and customer relations skills, and flexibility.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in team situations in fast-paced, deadline-driven R & D environments.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, moving from program to operational work seamlessly between projects quickly and effectively.
  • Proven record of independently developing solutions to collaboratively lead a team in solving specific problems related to issues of moderate to high complexity and impact.
  • American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) certification.
  • Active DOE “L” or” Q” level security clearance.

About Our Team:

The Radiation Protection Organization (Group 4610) provides radiation protection services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include translation of DOE directives and federal regulations into SNL-specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations.
