The successful candidate:
- Coordinates and directs the perioperative patient care operations
- Coordinates staff, call, and vacation schedules, time and attendance documentation and approvals
- Oversees in-services, educational programs for surgical services staff. Oversees and maintains surgical services staff competencies, cross-training, and on-boarding activities
- Effectively analyzes and recommends resources required within the department and participates in selecting or procuring outside resources, instruments/equipment for specific surgical/GI cases.
- Coordinates with Medical staff, Surgical Director, peers, and direct reports to resolve conflict and maintain positive interdisciplinary professional relationships
- Maintains, leads and coordinates quality and performance improvement activities through unit-based and hospital wide councils and interdepartmental activities. Participates in developing practices and processes that represent best practice standards across the enterprise.
- Ensures adherence to perioperative nursing/AORN/ASPAN/AAMI/SGNA standards of practice.
- Recommends to the Director, personnel decisions including hiring, terminations, disciplinary action, performance, development, training, and credential verification, i.e., licensure/certification.
- Ability to navigate the clinical information systems as needed to perform job duties.
- Works with the clinical leadership on hospital and department policy development.
- Advocates for patients’ rights by utilizing established mechanisms for management of ethical issues.
- Appropriately addresses and resolves patient complaints and communicates resolution to patient relations in a timely manner.
- Recognizes department problems and uses critical-thinking skills to take appropriate actions.
- Voluntarily cross-trains, covers for, and assists with other duties and departmental functions within his/her scope of practice and not covered by his/her job description.
- Effectively handles supervision of direct reports including documentation of personnel records in a timely manner.
- Assist with the development and monitoring operational and capital budgets and justify variances.
- Assist with coordination of direct reports, performance improvement activities within the department.
- Monitors and oversees departmental activity to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies including state, federal, and Joint Commission.
- Assist with meeting and maintain department’s quality outcomes and patient satisfaction.
- Coordinates staff meetings and cultivates team spirit and departmental pride by recognizing employee accomplishments and providing an atmosphere of open communication.
- Works with the surgeons/physician/anesthesia leadership to reach and maintain service line goals and new business opportunities.
- Works with team leads to optimizes surgical department operations by managing block utilization.
- Able to identify critical departmental issues and effectively communicate those issues to Director and/or administration when appropriate.
- Consistently completes projects by due date in a manner that demonstrates self-motivation, initiative and a high-level of productivity.
- Completes other duties as assigned by Director of Surgery
- Responds to and investigates variance reports involving perioperative department or processes with the surgical services manager in a timely manner.
- Participate in developing practices and processes that represent best practice standards across the enterprise.
- Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Oversees orientation and continuing education to direct report and stakeholders in the department.
- Appropriately recommends enough qualified and competent persons to provide care/service in the surgical department and assures the qualifications and competence of those staff members (who are not licensed independent practitioners).
- Effectively analyzes and recommends space and other resources needed by the department.
- Represents department on the manager level of assigned committees and meetings.
- Effectively handles supervision of direct reports including documentation of personnel records in a timely manner.
- Effectively coaches and mentors’ employees to capitalize and grow talent.
- Projects and maintains positive working relationships by consistently displaying a caring and professional demeanor with his/her public and staff (peers, subordinates, supervisor’s physicians, patients, and others.) Demonstrates high moral and ethical behavior.
Qualifications
Your qualifications should include:
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in OR, PACU, SDS experience
- Experience in Sterile Processing and Surgical Operations
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse License
- National Certification in nursing leadership and/or specialty in nursing required within 1 year of hire.

City of Hope employees pay is based on the following criteria: work experience, qualifications, and work location.
This position is eligible for an annual incentive bonus.
Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $43.51 - $71.62 / hour
The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
