College/Department Information
The Medical College of Georgia Department of Physiology's focus is the framework of the body's cells, organs and systems, how they work, and how abnormal function leads to disease. The department is dedicated to outstanding research and excellence in education. Our federally funded scientists study some of the nation's top killers like cardiovascular disease and hypertension, and train independent, creative, productive scholars and PhD graduates, who publish in top tier journals and who are competitive for positions wherever they choose to go. The department offers programs leading to the PhD degree. By virtue of their interdisciplinary training, the department's graduates compete successfully for positions in medical schools, universities, government, and industry.
Job Summary
The position requires the daily performance of complex chemical, biological and animal tissue preparation in the setting of a basic science research lab. In addition, the position will work with mice, conduct the experiments and record the experimental results in the lab. The position will develop and evaluate new techniques and procedures and functions independently on small less complex projects. The incumbent will also perform blood sampling; blood pressure studies; and data acquisition, analyses and tabulation. Depending on particular experiments, some work may be required in different core facilities and may require weekend work.
Research in the Kriegel laboratory is focused on 1) understanding molecular changes associated with hypertension and/or acute/chronic kidney pathology, and 2) understanding how chronic kidney disease leads to cardiovascular disease and dysfunction in adults and children. The laboratory applies cutting edge molecular technologies to understand complex patho/physiological processes. Projects include work in cell and animal models, as well as translational studies involving human subjects.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities to include but not limited to:
Lab Operations
Operate, calibrate and perform routine maintenance on specialized equipment used in research. Carry out assigned duties for ordering and maintaining supply of inventories. Oversee daily lab operations in the absence of the supervisor or Principal Investigator.

Animal Management
Prepare laboratory animals for surgery, perform surgical procedures as instructed, and assist with feeding, watering and general care of animals (both pre- and post-operative). Coordinate administrative and technical arrangements of animal models and maintain records related to use as directed.

Experiments
Assist with the evaluation, interpretation and assessment of experimental data and quality control of assays. Participate in preparation of media, stains and reagents. Administer study relevant treatments and medications, as well as perform biological sample collection, as needed. Perform various molecular and biochemical assays and protocols on samples collected from human and animal subjects. Record and compile accurate records and communicate summaries of experimental results.

Fiscal Management
Participate in the tracking and monitoring of budgetary resources to ensure effective lab operations.

Safety and Compliance
Use independent judgement in the daily operation of the lab to ensure safe and efficient use of resources. Monitor use of resources to ensure compliance with Federal guidelines and institutional protocols.

Lab Meetings
Actively participate in lab meetings, which includes staying apprised of related scientific literature to enhance level of participation, as well as this promotes better research, and assist with preparing manuscripts based on conclusions drawn from research efforts and pursue publishing as directed.

Other Perform other duties incidental to work described herein.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in research, basic science or a clinical setting particularly clinical trials research. OR Associate degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years of experience in research, basic science or a clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.
Preferred Qualifications
Having any of the relevant backgrounds mentioned above is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
Detail oriented with strong multi-tasking and prioritization skills.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.


ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Willingness and ability to work with research animals.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Salary: $17.88-$21.92 hourly.
Pay Band: B5
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
