Summary

The Office of Surgical Research (OSR) within the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery and in Collaboration with CTSU Oncology department within the Dan L. Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center (DLDCCC) has an immediate opening for a Clinical Research Coordinator III with the Breast Surgery Team. This position provides with day to day activities of clinical trials in the area of breast cancer. Many of these duties will include monitoring of research participants, enrollment, and screening. Responsibilities require flexibility and detail oriented individual to work closely with senior research staff. Performs patient screening, blood draws, plans and schedules study visits, does reporting for IRBS, FDA, and Data Safety Review Committee.

Job Duties

  • Coordinates clinical research activities with patient care, collaborating with physicians across multiple specialties, clinic staff, and hospital teams to ensure protocol adherence and compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Coordinates study procedures to minimize additional clinic visits and disruption to routine clinical care. (20%)

  • Collaborates with physicians and care team members to assess, document, and grade adverse events according to standardized NCI guidelines. Reports adverse events to study sponsors as required and communicates any necessary dose delays, dose modifications, supportive care, or other interventions to the treating physician and care team. (20%)

  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of multiple study protocols to screen potential participants, confirm eligibility, and coordinate required tests and procedures while maintaining appropriate treatment timelines. (10%)

  • Serves as the lead coordinator for up to four clinical research protocols, including screening, enrollment, and ongoing participant follow-up throughout the trial. Provides cross-coverage and support to other members of the research team as needed. (10%)

  • Balances study protocol requirements and timelines with the need to provide timely clinical care within an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center and academic health science environment. (10%)

  • Manages scheduling conflicts and unexpected disruptions, including departmental scheduling changes, clinic cancellations, and weather-related closures that may affect treatment timelines, response assessments, protocol adherence, and timely data collection. (10%)

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for clinical trial participants. In collaboration with physicians, evaluates reported symptoms to determine whether they may be related to the investigational product, underlying disease, other medications, or a combination of factors. Determines when escalation is necessary and evaluates the potential impact on study conduct. (15%)

  • Conducts clinical research activities at Harris Health System and other BCM-affiliated hospitals, as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Medical Degree.
  • Oncology study experience.
  • Technical knowledge of REDCap, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
