Job Summary
The Theology Department at Xavier University of Louisiana, a Catholic and Historically Black University, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Catholic Studies at the assistant professor level beginning in fall 2027. This position is an opportunity for a teacher and scholar with demonstrated expertise in Catholic studies to contribute to a growing department and undergraduate core curriculum. Scholars whose research and/or teaching connects Catholic studies with history, theology, biblical studies, psychology, ethics, decolonial thought, womanist thought, feminist thought, interreligious dialogue, science-engaged theology, or other interdisciplinary approaches to Catholic intellectual and religious traditions are especially encouraged to apply. Job Duties
Teach undergraduate-level courses in theology, including introductory courses and more specialized courses in Catholic studies and their area(s) of specialization.
Maintain an active research agenda and a record of scholarly, peer-reviewed publications.
Mentor students minoring and majoring in theology.
Engage in service to the department, college, and university.

The teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester.
About the Department
The Department of Theology serves the University’s core curriculum and a growing group of Theology majors and minors. Our graduates typically move on to graduate programs in Theology, law school, or medical school. The Department currently has four full-time faculty members for the 2027–2028 academic year. The Department faculty are especially proud of 1) the quality of instruction, 2) the rigor of the curriculum, 3) their contributions to the core curriculum, and 4) the accomplishments of their graduates. A fifth faculty member is sought to support the continued growth and expansion of the program and to assist in providing classes that bring issues in Catholic Studies to students in dynamic ways.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Theology, Biblical Studies, Religious Studies, or a closely related field;
Strong commitment to teaching a full load of 24 credit hours per academic year;
An emerging record of scholarly publications;
Commitment to mentoring students;
Commitment to the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana;
Commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population;
Write and speak English proficiently.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with teaching and mentoring a diverse student population;
A record of scholarly publications within the field of Catholic Studies;
Awareness of pedagogical best practices and ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge in this area
